Minimalism and the Beauty of Just Enough
I’ve always been intrigued by minimalism.
There’s something peaceful about minimalist spaces—no clutter, everything in its place, easy to clean, easy to find what you need. I admired the calm that seemed to radiate from those all-white walls and neatly labeled drawers. But every time I saw photos of minimalist homes with a single chair in the middle of an empty room, I’d think, That’s beautiful… but that’s not me.
I love cozy. I love curling up with a warm blanket, sipping tea by the fireplace, and being surrounded by things that hold meaning. My home is a refuge. I want it to feel lived in, warm, welcoming. So I assumed minimalism just wasn’t for me. I thought it meant stripping everything away and living with stark emptiness. And honestly, that felt cold.
Then one day, over lunch, a friend who had practiced minimalism for years said something that shifted everything. She said,
“Johanna, it’s not about getting rid of everything you own. It’s about having just enough.”
That phrase stuck with me.
Just enough.
Not too much.
Not too little.
Just enough for your life, your season, your peace.
That was the beginning of a different kind of journey for me. My path into minimalism hasn’t been dramatic. It’s more like a long road trip with scenic stops and unexpected turns. I didn’t sell everything and move into a tiny home. I simply began letting go of the excess—one drawer, one shelf, one expectation at a time.
And as I let go, I discovered something surprising: peace.
Peace when I opened my closet and could see what I actually wore.
Peace when my kitchen counters were clear and inviting.
Peace in the space between things—space to breathe, space to rest, space to enjoy what I have.
This version of minimalism isn’t sterile or cold. It’s warm and intentional. It’s about creating a home that supports the life I want to live—not one that overwhelms me with upkeep and decisions.
Minimalism, for me, isn’t about empty rooms. It’s about full hearts.
It’s not about less for the sake of less. It’s about making room for what matters most.
